atmail is a commercial Linux messaging platform provider. The company was founded in 2001, and is headquartered in Peregian Beach, Australia. The company develops webmail, mail-server and groupware solutions built for Linux and other Unix operating systems, and includes the source code under a commercial license.
Originally developed in 1998, the software is now referred to as atmail instead of the original name '@Mail'. It was initially developed in Perl, later in PHP using the Zend Framework. On May 19, 2008, a free version of the atmail webmail client was released. It is a lightweight, webmail-only version of the commercial application and is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license.[1]
History
1998
atmail was one of the first commercial webmail products available at the time providing an alternative to desktop clients which required installation and lengthy account setup when needing to check email from a different computer.
2001
atmail 2.X was released.
2002
New logo for the company and release of the third version of the software.
2004
Version 4.X was unveiled and a fresh logo appeared that would stay until 2007.
2006
atmail launched the appliance range with a plug’n play server.
2007
atmail 5.X using php was shipped.
2008
A free version of the atmail webmail client was made available. Named atmail open, it is a lightweight, webmail-only version of the commercial application and is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license.
2009
The Kurrajong, NSW office was fitted with a 1 kW solar panel array. Atmail released the new 6.X version which is a complete rewrite of the software based on the Zend and jQuery platform.
2010
The flagship atmail 6.20 version was released with support for Exchange ActiveSync.
2011
A second office in Peregian Beach was open to give the dev team more space.
2012
Opening of the U.S. office in Santa Monica, California.
2014
Atmail unveil their new branding and website.
