Assumption University (AU, Thai: มหาวิทยาลัยอัสสัมชัญ) is a private Catholic university with three campuses in the Hua Mak, Central World Plaza in downtown Bangkok, and Suvarnabhumi areas of Samut Prakan Province, Thailand. The university is led by the Brothers of St. Gabriel, who have been active in education in Thailand since 1901. Assumption University is noted for attracting large numbers of foreign students from countries including Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and other Asian countries. Students from China make up the largest number of foreign students. There are exchange students from the United States (Loyola) and Europe. Assumption University was also the first international university in Thailand.

History

Assumption University is a non-profit institution administered by the Brothers of St. Gabriel, a worldwide Catholic religious order, founded in France in 1705 by St. Louis Marie De Montfort, devoted to education and philanthropic activities. The congregation has been operating many educational institutions in Thailand since 1901.

Assumption University became an autonomous educational institution in 1969 when Assumption Commercial College (ACC) became the Assumption School of Business. In 1972 it became the Assumption Business Administration College (ABAC). In 1990 the college was granted university status by the Ministry of University Affairs and took the name of Assumption University (AU).[1]

The university has a student body of about 19,870 including a fairly large complement of foreign students drawn from 75 countries of the world.[2]

Academic programs

Assumption University (AU) offers many majors, such as business administration, information technology, communication and computer network technology,[3] science, technology, engineering, nursing, law, communication arts, architecture, biotechnology, languages, and music. It is also the leading provider of E-learning in Thailand since it has established the College of Internet Distance Education on 21 December 2002. AU's Graduate School of Philosophy and Religion offers a PhD program in philosophy, a PhD program in religious studies, an MA program in philosophy and an MA program in religious studies.

Graduate School of Philosophy and Religion

The Graduate School of Philosophy and Religion (GSPR), founded 1993, is located on the Huamak campus Bang Kapi District Bangkok in close vicinity to Ramkhamhaeng University and the Rajamangala National Stadium. The school offers four programs: A Ph.D. program in philosophy, a Ph.D. program in religious studies, an MA program in philosophy and an MA program in religious studies. All four programs are recognized by the Office of Higher Education Commission (OHEC) and accredited by the Office of National Education Standards and Quality Assessment (ONESQA). Student body and faculty are international and the academic lingua franca is English. Teaching and research at the school is bridging Philosophy, Religious Studies, Spirituality, Cultural Studies, Analytic and Continental as well as Eastern and Western approaches. The GSPR also hosts the Guna Chakra Research Center.

AU has been expanding the Suvarnabhumi campus with Gothic-style and neo-baroque buildings and creating a nature-centered atmosphere it calls the "University in the Park".

In March 1985, H.E. General Prem Tinasulanonda, Prime Minister, officially inaugurated the Hua Mak campus building and opened the new Graduate School of Business.[4]

Simultaneously and to enhance the idea that ABAC is a Catholic institution, a chapel was built up dedicated to the Lady of Annunciation and financed by funds from Germany.

Wednesday, July 17, 2013 Rev. Bro. Dr. Bancha Saenghiran, the President of Assumption University signed an MOU with Mr.Zheng Yan Kang (Tsinghua University) and Mr.Bai He Lin (China Railways) to establish the "Tsinghua - ABAC AEC Research Institute" at Assumption University, Suvarnabhumi Campus. Objective of the Tsinghua – ABAC AEC Research Institute 1. Gain knowledge and intelligence by innovative research framework about marketing, tourism and hospitality, organization development and social sciences in AEC context. 2. Collaborative partnership in research to widen the scope of intelligence information and gathering intellectual assets. 3. Transfer of knowledge to Society for the benefit of both academia and practitioners. 4.Develop a Sustainable Learning and Knowledge based research enterprise supporting the management of Small, Medium, and Large and International Enterprises.

Institute for Research and Academic Services (IRAS)

The Research Institute of Assumption University, originally named as the Center for Research in Business or CRIB, has been serving Thai business community and international corporations by offering a wide range of business research services since the time it was established in 1982 by Dr. Federic L. Ayer, the first and former Vice President for Research Affairs.
