After auditioning for Mani Ratnam's Kadal (2013), Ashwathy was encouraged by the director to continue to look for opportunities as an actress. Ashwathy made her first feature film appearance by appearing in a music video in Maalai Pozhudhin Mayakathilaey (2012), before portraying a character in Gautham Menon's bilingual films, Neethane En Ponvasantham and Yeto Vellipoyindhi Manasu (2012) as Radhika, the fiancé of the lead character Varun. In 2016, Ashwathy played her first lead role in Gowtham Sundararajan's directorial debut Kannula Kaasa Kattappa, portraying the daughter of a millionaire. She was signed for the role after being recommended by Gowtham's wife, Kokila Hariram, who had been Ashwathy's dance teacher.[5][6]
