Ash of Gods: Redemption is a fantasy video game which is currently in development by international indie studio AurumDust. This project featured the elements of different genres, including visual novel, rogue-like RPG, turn-based strategy and the card game.[1][2]
The game is sustained in a style of dark fantasy, in a medieval setting[3] (Ash of Gods' world is equal in its technological development and a moral way of life to High Medieval Ages of Western Europe).
The game's script is written by Russian dark fantasy writer Sergey Malitsky.
Gameplay
The story is presented in a form of visual novel, with typical for this genre nonlinear plot development. Its progress is defined by the actions the player makes and the dialogue cues that he picks. The crucial difference from the typical games of this genre is the fact that the story continues even after death of the major protagonist.
The combat encounters are implemented in a way of turn-based battles in isometric perspective. The crucial feature of game's combat system is usage as a resource for battle skills not only of character's energy but his health too. Besides that, player can use a pack of cards which are analogues of mighty spells. Formation of the pack, issuance of the cards during the battle and their usage are in many ways similar to classical collectible card games. Thus, the cards that player receives in the beginning of the battle are defining player's strategy, while the characters that he have on the field are defining his tactics.[4]
In its mechanics and visual realisation the game is similar to The Banner Saga from Stoic Studio.[5]
Plot
In a world named Terminus the player takes control over several groups of characters, each headed by one of the major protagonists. There are three of them in the game: retired captain of royal guard Thorn Brenin, wandering healer Hoper Rouley and the professional hitman Lo Pheng. These heroes found themselves at the threshold of events which are menacing to grow into the end of civilization.
The storytelling in Ash of Gods: Redemption is built on the sequence of moral choices where each of player's decisions significantly affects the further development of events. The crucial aspect here is the principle of "less evil": the player must constantly choose between the quick profit that may lead to unpleasant events in the future and the sacrifice that, in opposite, will make easier the completing of one of the following episodes.
Few chapters of novel by Sergey Malitsky (which is the literary base of the game's script) are published on AurumDust's website. These chapters describe how each of the story's main heroes was involved into general adventure.[6]
Game features
Among the features of Ash of Gods its developers are emphasizing next:
Rogue-like storytelling
"You choose who will live and who must die. The team’s resources are tied to the resources of the combat party. So if you mindlessly rush forward, you will gradually lose your characters, including the major ones. But even the death of the party’s leader won’t lead to “game over”"!
A new approach to tactical strategies
"A mix of turn-based strategy and card RPG, where the cards define your strategy and the characters’ classes define your tactics on the battle field".
Smart AI that constantly learns exactly how to defeat you
"AI automatically adapts to your style of playing – you will never be able to invent “imba” tactics or find that “invincible” team build".
PVP and PVE multiplayer modes
"Live through the story and conquer the world ratings with your characters in the multiplayer part of the game".
Scrupulously hand-drawn graphics
"The illustrations are in the manner of old-school Disney cartoons and the creations of the Soviet animation studio “Soyuzmultfilm” of the 60s. Character animation in combat scenes are based on live actors’ motion capture.".
Development
Official development of Ash of Gods: Redemption began started in 2016, but according to AurumDust's CEO Nikolay Bondarenko (who previously worked in such companies as Streko-Graphics, TvxGames and GameNet), the concept of this game as one built on a ramified system of moral choices was developed by him several years earlier.[7] That idea was under development for several years, but, due to several factors (including the world financial crisis to the author's own doubts), the implementation of the project was indefinitely postponed.
On May 23, 2017 AurumDust Studio launched a Kickstarter campaign for Ash of Gods: Redemption, with a $75,000 goal.[8]
Soundtrack
The soundtrack for Ash of Gods: Redemption is created by composers Adam Skorupa, Krzysztof Wierzynkiewicz and Michał Cielecki (who wrote the music for such projects as Max Pain, Painkiller, The Witcher and EVE Online).
