ArtReview is an international contemporary art magazine based in London. Its sister publication ArtReview Asia has an Asian perspective and is based in Shanghai.
Publication
ArtReview covers established and emerging artists in a mixture of international exhibition reviews, artist profiles, city art tours and artist commissions, including artist projects published as supplements to the regular edition of the magazine. Annual features include the Power 100, a guide to the 100 most powerful figures in contemporary art, published in the November issue of the magazine; and Future Greats, a selection of emerging artists, published in the March issue. Its current editors are Mark Rappolt and David Terrien.
In October 2011, the magazine was criticised by the Chinese government for placing Ai Weiwei at number one of that year's Power 100. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin responded "China has many artists who have sufficient ability. We feel that a selection that is based purely on a political bias and perspective has violated the objectives of the magazine".[1]
In May 2013 the magazine launched a sister publication, ArtReview Asia, which covers contemporary art worldwide from an Asian perspective, published four times a year in English and distributed throughout Asia. It is edited by Aimee Lin from the magazine's Shanghai base.
History
ArtReview was founded in London in 1949[2] by a retired country medical practitioner, Dr Richard Gainsborough, and the first edition was designed by his wife, the artist Eileen Mayo.[3] Over its 60 years of continuous publication, it has evolved from an eight-page black-and-white broadsheet newspaper published fortnightly to a magazine format published nine times a year.[4] The magazine is distributed in 28 countries.[2]
Since 1949, ArtReview has been published under the names Art News and Review (1949–1961), The Arts Review (1962–69), Arts Review (1970–1992), Art Review (1992–2000) and ArtReview (2000–present).
Website
The website, artreview.com, was launched in 2007. The website features art news and blogs and artist commissions.
