Ardleigh Green /ˈɑːrdli/ is a neighbourhood in the London Borough of Havering, United Kingdom, and part of the Hornchurch post town. It is a suburban and predominantly residential development.
Ardleigh Green has a small set of shops and London Bus services to Hornchurch, Gidea Park and Romford. It was known as "Hardley Green" until at least the early 17th century.[1]
Toponymy
The name Ardleigh is a corruption of an older name, Haddeleye, meaning "heath clearing" or "clearing where heather grows" from the Old English hæth and lēah. It was still referred to as "Hardley Green" as late as 1883 when the name appeared in an Ordnance Survey map of the area.[2]
Education
Ardleigh Green has a combined junior and primary school, as well as Havering College of Further and Higher Education.
