Apa local government of Benue State was created in 1991 by the then military head of state of Nigeria, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida; covering what was the old Ochekwu district of Otukpo division. Its headquarters is at Ogbokpo. It is one of the 9 local government areas in the southern senatorial zone which is majorly occupied by the Idoma people of Benue State.
