Cruz y Ortiz
Cruz y Ortiz arquitectos is an architectural studio founded by Antonio Cruz Villalón and Antonio Ortiz García. Cruz y Ortiz was founded in 1974 with headquarters in Seville, in Amsterdam since 2001, and in Madrid since 2015. The office also collaborates with other partner firms in many European countries as well as in Mexico, China, and Lebanon.
Outstanding Works
After their first years with works and projects in Spain, their activity spread to other European countries such as Germany, Switzerland or The Netherlands. Along these years, many different projects have been developed. Among the most outstanding ones, we find Santa Justa Railway Station in Seville, Madrid and Seville Stadiums in Spain, Basel Railway Station in Switzerland or The New Rijksmuseum in The Netherlands. Other important works are the Spanish Pavilion for the Expo in Hannover or the Public Library Infanta Elena in Seville. At present (2017) the office is in charge of the design and construction of the Atlético de Madrid Football Club new stadium.
Teaching & awards
Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz are architects by the School of Architecture of Madrid since 1971. They have been visiting professors at the Lausanne and Zurich polytechnics, Harvard, Cornell and Columbia universities in EEUU and at the School of Architecture of Pamplona in Spain. They have held the Kenzo Tange Professorship at Harvard’s G.S.D. and since 2004 have been honorary professors at the University of Seville and occupied the Cátedra Blanca at the School of Architecture. Last year they were visiting professors at Technische Universiteit in Delft, The Netherlands, and at Hepia (Haute Ecole du paysage, d’ingenierie et d’architecture) in Geneve.
Some of their better-known projects and works are the New Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Spanish Pavilion at the Hannover 2000 Expo, the Cartuja Stadium in Seville, the addition to the SBB Railway Station in Basel, Seville’s Public Library, the Stadium of the Community of Madrid, the Huelva Bus Station, Santa Justa Railway Station in Seville and, also in Seville, a housing building in Doña María Coronel Street.
Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz have recently received many awards, as the Honorary Fellowship of the American Institute of Architects, decoration as Ridder of the Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw, awarded by King William I of The Netherlands, the Gold Medal of Architecture for their career, awarded by the Consejo Superior de Colegios de Arquitectos de España. Previously, they have also been awarded the International Spanish Architecture Award for the Rijksmuseum in 2013, the Andalucía Architecture Award 2008 for the Basel Railway Station, the National Prize of Spanish Architecture, the Prize City of Seville, the Prize City of Madrid and in 1997 the Gold Medal of Andalusia for their professional career.
Cruz and Ortiz’s work has been widely reviewed in the main specialized publications and several monographs about it have been published (Tanais, Princeton Architectural Press, Birkhäuser, AV, TC Cuadernos, NAI publishers and Gustavo Gili). In addition, exhibitions about their work have taken place in Zurich (E.T.H.), Berne (Amthaus), Lausanne (EPFL), Bolzano (Ordine degli Architetti), Boston (Harvard, Graduate School of Design), Berlin (Aedes East Gallery), Amsterdam (Amsterdam Public Library), Seville and Granada (Andalusian regional Government).
