Anti- is an American record label founded in 1999 as a sister label to Epitaph. While Epitaph's focus has mostly been on punk rock, Anti-'s roster includes country (Merle Haggard), hip hop (Sage Francis, The Coup), reggae (Michael Franti), soul (Bettye LaVette), indie folk (The Swell Season, Saintseneca), rap rock (One Day as a Lion), indie rock (Islands, Japandroids) and Tom Waits.
Headed by Andy Kaulkin, Anti- first gained attention by releasing Tom Waits's Grammy Award-winning Mule Variations in 1999. Other veteran recording artists such as rhythm and blues singers Solomon Burke, Bettye LaVette and Marianne Faithfull have signed onto Anti- after leaving other labels.[1]
Andy Kaulkin
Kaulkin began working for the Epitaph label. His role he was in was looking after the labels data management system.[2] In 1995, he was head of marketing.[3] He eventually worked his way up to become the president for the label, and worked there until 1998. Later he founded Anti- and put his energy into the label. Under Kaulkin's stewardship, the label began with the release of Mule Variations by Tom Waits which was met with success.[4][5] The other artists Kaulkin had signed to the label include Jade Jackson who's vivid storytelling attracted him.[6] Mavis Staples came to the label as a result of a meeting between Kaulkin and her manager.[7]
Haggard is also a musician and he played piano on "1."Haggard (Like I've Never Been Before)", which was the title track for the Haggard Like Never Before album by Merle Haggard.[8] He had multiple roles as composer, musician and producer on the Blues Got Soul album by King Ernest.[9]
