Anirban Bhattacharya

Anirban Bhattacharya (Bengali: অনির্বাণ ভট্টাচার্য) is an Indian (Bengali) stage and film actor. He played the lead role in many popular theatre productions. His first successful theatre was Debi Sarpamasta, written by Manoj Mitra, directed by Debesh Chattopadhyay. His other notable works are Anthony Soudamini, Nagamandala(famous play by Girish Karnad), Jara agun Lagay, Bisorjan, FM Mahanagar, Karu Basana, Awdyo Shesh Rajani, Athoi etc. In 2017, he got the very prestigious Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards(META) as Best Actor in a Leading Role(Male) for Awdyo Shash Rajani^[6]. In 2015, he started his film career with the Zee Bangla telefim Kader Kuler Bou. He got fame and immense popularity for his character as Bishan Roy from the film Eagoler Chokh^[7]. For playing this role he picked up the Filmfare Awards East for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 2017. He portrayed important roles in Arshinagar by Aparna Sen, Colkatay Columbus, Durga Sohay by Arindam Sil and many others.

Early Life

Anirban was born on 7 October 1986 in Midnapore, West Bengal. He did his schooling from Church School in Midnapore. After that, in 2004 he moved to Kolkata to study Theatre from Rabindra Bharati University. he became the first class first in Graduation in 2007. He completed his Master's in drama with specialization on Physical acting. He received the Young Artist Scholarship, 2009 from Cultural Ministry of the Government of India.In 2005 he joined Uhinee Kolkata for formal theatre training, under the guidance of Adrija Dasgupta, a Fellow Pass-out from National School of Drama. He learnt the basics of theatre under her mentorship. He acted in various theater productions that she directed, between 2005-2010. ^[8]

He acted in various theater productions between 2005-2010.In 2008 He got the opportunity to act in the workshop based theatre production ‘Jhunki’ (The Risk) conducted by renowned Mr. Steve Clorfiene, student of Yergi Grotowski. It was a collaboration of American Council and Rabindra Bharati University.In 2010 he was selected by some of the eminent theatre personalities to work as a whole time professional actor at MINERVA, the first State Repertoire in West Bengal.^[9] He acted in 3 productions like Raja lear, Debi Sarpomosta and Chandragupta.After that he resigned from Minerva Repertoire in January 2013 and started his career as a professional freelance theatre actor. He is also loved for his singing capability and beautiful voice.^[10]

Direction

Anirban has shown a great potential and strength in direction.In 2010 he has formed his own theatre group 'Sangharam Hatibagan' with his friend Tathagata Chaudhuri. Here he directed two plays- 'Choumatha' and 'Guru'. Recently he directed another short play 'Udorniti' translated from play ‘Out At Sea’ by Slaomir Morzek.

Filmography

Anirban started his career in Bengali language films in 2015 with Zee Bangla Cinema Originals' such as Kader Kuler Bou, Jodi Balo Hyan and Ebhabeo Phire Asa Jay. He hit the bigscreen in Aparna Sen's Arshinagar in a supporting role.^[14] In 2016, he appeared in Arindam Sil's Eagoler Chokh portraying a vastly different character named 'Bishan Roy' and has become the talk of the town eventually for his immense performance.^[15] He has also bagged the BFJA-Most Promising Actor Male award for essaying Bishan Roy in Eagoler Chokh. He has also picked up the Filmfare Awards East for the Best Actor in a Supporting Role for the same role.^[16] The extremely talented actor has also awarded with the Best debutant Actor award at International Bengali Film Award(IBFA). Recently, Saurav Palodhi's Colkatay Columbus has hit the screen where Anirban has played the role of a radio jockey. He has awarded the "Ajeyo Samman 2017" by newspaper Ebela for becoming the most praised Actor in 2016 and also the new talk of the town.^[17]

Television

Presently, Anirban has worked in a non fictional television comedy show Apur Sangsar, along with Saswata Chatterjee which has been started to air on Zee Bangla from 26 January.^[29] He has appeared in popular shows of Zee Bangla like Didi No.1 as guest and Dadagiri Unlimited Season 7 as celebrity contestant. The play Awdyo Shesh Rajni(Anirban as lead) was aired on Home Theatre of Colours Bangla. Now he is starting to host a crime show Hushiar Bangla on Colours Bangla^[30].
