Andrew Yakubu
Andrew Laah Yakubu (born September 10, 1955) is the former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. He was dismissed by ex President Jonathan for insubordination and his inordinate motive of larceny. He was later found by the anti-graft agency as very corrupt with the recent discovery of stolen money in his kitty, one of several discoveries of stolen wealth perpetrated by government officials from the inception of the country's independence. He was succeeded by Joseph Dawha in 2014.[1][2] His honors include the Presidential Merit Award by the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (1997) and the GMD of NNPC Award (1987). He was given the chieftaincy title “Iyan Atyap” by the Atyap Kingdom of Kaduna State in 2004, and he is a full member of the Iyan Council of Chiefs.[3][4] He is a fellow of the Nigerian Association of Technologist in Engineering and an associate fellow of the Chemical Society of Nigeria.[5]
Life
Yakubu attended the Government College in Keffi from 1969 to 1973, obtaining a West African School Certificate.[5] Thereafter, he attended the College of Arts and Science in Zaria until 1975, when he entered the Ahmadu Bello University there, studying chemical engineering.[1] After graduating with a BA in 1979, he served various roles in refineries before becoming executive director of operations at NETCO in March 2005. In addition to his education in chemistry, he received a certificate in Strategy and Organization from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business Studies. He left that role in December 2006 to work at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, first as general manager and ultimately as managing director and CEO. He assumed the role several months after a national fuel crisis in Nigeria, when the NNPC was widely perceived as a corrupt organization,[5] and oversaw the resultant negative changes within the national institution until he was sacked during President Goodluck regime on allegations of corruption and insubordination and introduction of some neck-breaking policies and was eventually relieved of his duties by the then Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison- Madueke.
Sack From The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation
Andrew Yakubu was sacked as head of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation by former president Goodluck Jonathan due to an argument he had with the then serving petroleum minister Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke over who to appoint as the Managing Director of Nigerian Petroleum Development Company Limited (NPDC).[6]
[5] On the third of February 2017, huge amounts of cash ( USD 9.7 Million and GBP 72,000 ) was found in a store belonging to him in the city of Kaduna, Nigeria by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) team.[7] Andrew Yakubu reported to the commission’s Zonal office in Kano and made statement wherein he admitted ownership of the recovered money, claiming it was "gifts" from unnamed persons. He is currently complying to all invitations for further investigations into the discovered loot.
