Andrew S Gibbons

Andrew S. Gibbons is the Department Chair of Instructional Psychology and Technology at Brigham Young University. He has experience in the field of Instructional Design and Technology. For eighteen years he served as a Consultant for two major marketing and consultancy firms where he developed training systems for fighter pilots, guided missile maintenance personnel, airline pilots and middle school science students.[1] In 1993 to this date, he has been involved in lecturing and researching in the fields of instructional design, design-based research, and mentoring interfaces. He developed the Theory of Model Centered Instruction; a theory rooted in Cognitive Psychology.

He is married to Marsha Gibbons; with whom he has five children and thirty one grandchildren. He currently resides in the state of Utah, United States of America.[1]

Education

Between 1962 and 1964, Professor Gibbons did some undergraduate work in Chemistry and Zoology. In 1969, he received a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English and Chemistry from Brigham Young University. Thereafter, in 1974, he received his Doctorate (Ph. D.) at Brigham Young University where he majored in Instructional Psychology.[2]

Academic career

Prior to 1993, Professor Gibbons worked as a practitioner in the discipline of Instructional Technology. He has also provided consultancy services to Syracuse University, Routledge Publishers, IM Flash, the University of Phoenix, Coast Capital Savings and Intermountain Health Care.[2]

From 1993-2003, he taught and researched at Utah State University in the field of Instructional Technology. During his time there, he served as: Associate Professor in the Instructional Technology Programme; Senior Deisgner for the ID2 Development team; Faculty Search Committee Chairman; Advisor to the ACET Student Chapter; Advisor for the HETI Mathematics Project; Project Leader for the Weather CD ROM Project; Project Leader and Advisor for the Hill AFB Project; Lead Designer and Advisor for the ID2 Research Simulation Knowledge Base Project; Project Leader for the ID2 Research Student Interface Design Project as well as the Project Leader for the ID2 Research Student Management System Design Project.[2]

Since 2003, Professor Gibbons has held the position on Department Chair at Brigham Young University in the Department of Instructional Psychology and Technology.[3]

His professional service has allowed him to work as a Board member, Reviewer, Co-Organizer for entities including: the International Journal of Designs for Learning, Annual Conference of Professors of Instructional Design and Technology, the Association for Educational Communications Technology, PacifiCorp Design Competition, the IDT Record, Interdisciplinary Journal of Knowledge and Learning Objects, the Colorado Institute of technology, Northern Illonois University, University of Wisconsin and the Washington State University College of Nursing.[2]
