Andhra University was established in 1926. Located on the uplands of Visakhapatnam (the city of destiny), the campus has the Bay of Bengal on one side and the Kailasagiri hill range on the other is one of the largest campuses in India. Sir Dr.C.R.Reddy was the founder Vice-Chancellor of the university.

Andhra University College of Engineering (Autonomous), Visakhapatnam, is the campus college of University. It is one of the highly rated colleges of Engineering in the country. At the time of inception in 1955 by Prof Devaguptapu Seethapathi Rao it was a Department of Engineering with Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering as the main branches. Prof D. Seethapathi Rao started the Engineering department under the then VC A.L.Narayana and headed the department of engineering till 1966.

In 1960, the Department of Engineering was shifted to the present North campus spread over 150 acres (0.61 km2) of land. The Department of Chemical Technology, instituted in 1933, was shifted to the same campus in 1962, adding strength to the Engineering Departments. In 1966, the College of Engineering (Autonomous) became a constituent of the Andhra University.

The college played a vital role in International Fleet Review 2016 and the IFR village and exhibition was appreciated worldwide which was in AUCE ground.

Present

The College of Engineering (Autonomous) consists of 12 Engineering and four Basic Sciences departments, totalling 16 departments, offering 15 undergraduate Engineering day-time programmes and four undergraduate Engineering part-time programmes; 28 postgraduate Engineering programmes, one MCA and three M.Sc. programmes. All the departments run Ph.D programmes in research.

The college has Centres of Excellence carrying out research in specialized areas. These include:

The college is graded along with the Andhra University by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and awarded a rating of A + (85%).

The college is one of the four Lead Institutions selected in the state of Andhra Pradesh for World Bank Aid.

Admission

Students are admitted into the undergraduate programmes based on their score in the (EAMCET) [Engineering, Agricultural and Medical common entrance test] - a Common Entrance Test conducted by the Government of Andhra Pradesh.

Students can also be admitted into undergraduate courses through a test called AUEET (Andhra University Engineering Entrance Test ) for 5-Year Integrated Dual Degree courses and twinning programmes. In this course both Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) and Master of Technology (M.Tech.) degrees will be given in 5-years.

Students are admitted into Postgraduate programmes based on their GATE scores based on all India ranking (or) their ranking in (PGECET) [Post Graduate Engineering Common Entrance Test] - a test conducted by the Government of Andhra Pradesh.

Academics

Engineering Curriculum Development

The college follows a four-year duration (one year + six semesters) with external mode of examination for B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch./B.Pharm. programmes and a four semester course for the M.E./M.Tech. programmes. It is also having 5 yr integrated courses (B.Tech. + M.Tech.).

Post Graduation in Computer Science Curriculum The college follows a two-year duration with external mode of examination for MSc(Computer Science) program.

The students are admitted into undergraduate programmes based on their score in the EAMCET - a Common Entrance Test conducted by the Government of Andhra Pradesh and into postgraduate programmes based on their GATE scores based on all India ranking or their ranking in PGECET which was conducted by the Andhra Pradesh State Government for admissions into Technical Post Graduate programs. Admissions in the Post graduate program in Computer Science(MSc) is based on the AUCET/PGCET score. Majority of the AU Engineering College faculty possess higher qualifications than the mandatory minimum prescribed by the AICTE/UGC.

The departments of the college conduct Technical Paper Contests for students, with participation from students all over the country.
