Altibase is privately owned, a multinational software corporation that provides a relational database management system (RDBMS), headquartered in Seoul, South Korea. The company was founded in 1999 and has offices in South Korea, United States, and China. Altibase focuses on high-intensity transaction processing through random access memory (RAM), complementing its disk-resident database product.[1]

History

From 1991 through 1997 the Mr.RT project was an in-memory database research project, conducted by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute a government-funded research organization in South Korea.[2] Altibase was incorporated in 1999.[2] Released The first version, called Spiner, was released in 2000 for commercial use. It surpassed half of the in-memory DBMS market share in South Korea.[3] In 2002 the second version was released renamed to Altibase v2.0. By 2003, Altibase v3.0 was released[4] and it entered the Chinese market.[5] Released version 4.0 with hybrid architecture, combining RAM and disk databases, was released in 2004.[6]

In 2005 Altibase began working with Chinese telecommunications providers for billing systems,[7] and Twainese financial companies for home trading systems.[8] The software was certified by the Telecommunications Technology Association.[9] The Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs gave it an award in 2006.[10] Offices in China and United States opened in 2009.[11]

In 2011, version 5.5.1 was renamed it to HDB (for "hybrid database"). The Altibase Data Stream product for complex event processing was renamed DSM.[12] The product received a Korean technology award.[13] Altibase introduced certification services.[14] In 2012, HDB Zeta and Extreme were announced, and DSM renamed to CEP[15]

In 2013, yet another variant called XDB was announced,[16] and the company received ISO/IEC 20000 certification.[17] The company was mentioned in several marketing reports around this time, such as those by Gartner.[18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27]

In 2015, a community edition was released. The company was mentioned by some marketing reports.[28][29][30][31][32]

Clients

According to marketing research, Altibase had 550 customers and thousands of installations.[33]

Altibase's clients in the telecommunications, financial services, manufacturing, and utilities sectors include Bloomberg, LG U+, E*TRADE, HP, UAT Inc., SK Telecom, KT Corporation (formerly Korea Telecom), Hyundai Securities, Samsung Electronics, Shinhan Bank, Woori Bank, The South Korean Ministry of Defense, G-Market, and Chung-Ang University.[34][35]

Altibase users in Japan include FX Prime, a foreign exchange services company, and Retela Crea Securities.[36][37]

In China, the three major telecommunications companies, China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom, utilize ALTIBASE HDB in 29 of 31 Chinese provinces.[38]

Products and services

Altibase HDB is a database management system with hybrid architecture that combines an in-memory database with a conventional disk-resident database.[39] Altibase HDB features include SQL standards compliance, high-availability, replication, real-time ACID compliance, spatial, vertical and horizontal scalability, and compatibility with standard interfaces and programming languages such as ODBC, JDBC, OLE DB, .Net, Java, C/C++, and Precompiler. Altibase XDB (eXtreme DBMS) was first released in 2013, and integrated into HDB in 2015. XDB was a traditional relational database that had fast data processing speeds in main-memory. It came with high-availability, replication, and scalability features and with three interfaces include Direct Access Mode, Direct Access API Mode as well as conventional client/server protocols such as TCP/IP and IPC for more complex database operations.[16][40]

Altibase CEP is a data caching product for real-time complex event processing applications on Microsoft Windows. It was formerly known as Altibase Data Stream (DSM).[11][40]

Altibase offers technical support include database administrator services.
