All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU) (Bodo: दुलाराय बर' फरायसा आफाद) is a students organization (non-political) formed on February 15, 1967 in the Bodoland region of Assam, India. The ABSU under the leadership of Upendranath Brahma supported the movement for a separate state within Assam, to be called Bodoland for all tribal communities living on the North Bank of River Brahmaputra in Assam. The demand for Bodoland is the result of years of exploitation by the ruling Assamese communities in the post colonial Assam.

Objective

The primary objective of the organisation was to unite the Bodos for the presentation of their rich cultural heritage. ABSU paid more attention to the development of Bodo Society in the beginning, but for various social and political reasons the organisation had to associate itself with different movements. Many other organisations also supported the movements started by ABSU. Immediately after Upendra Nath Brahma got elected as the president in 1986, ABSU got a new dimension. The Union got directly involved in a political movement demanding a separate State. It submitted a memorandum to the central and state governments consisting of a 92-point charter of demands.

ABSU, the main and most powerful force behind the Bodo movements is still carrying on its work protecting the Bodo race and the Society.

History

The All Bodo Students Union was one of the associate organisations of Bodo Sahitya Sabha (Bodo Literary Society). The first session of the All Bodo Students Union was held at Kokrajhar in 1919 under the initiative of Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma. On February9, 1966 the Goalpara District Bodo Students Union was formed after a meeting held at Kokrajhar Tribal Rest House. Many resolutions were adopted in the first annual conference of the Goalpara District Bodo Students Union held on 9, 10 and 11 February, 1967. The Bodo Students were encouraged by the then Prime minister Indira Gandhi's declaration before the Mizo Union delegation on January 13, 1967 that Assam would be recognized on the basis of a federal structure. They felt the need for all India level Bodo Students Union. On February15, 1967 the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) was formed at a meeting held at Kokrajhar College. Baneswar Basumatary and Kankeswar Narzary (khungra) are elected as founder president and G. Secretary. Hiracharan Narjinary and Kiranchandra Narjinary from West Bengal also attended the meeting. Hiracharan Narjinary was elected as one of the Vice Presidents of All Bodo Students Union.
