Life and career
1994–2008: Early life and career beginnings
Englert was born on 15 June 1994 in Australia.[1][2] She is the daughter of New Zealand-born, Australia-based director Jane Campion, and Australian filmmaker Colin David Englert.[3][4] She was raised in Sydney and on locations where her mother's work took the family, explaining, "I’ve spent half my life on planes. I have a lot of love for New Zealand, though. That is where the really arty, whimsical side of the family resided — in hobbitland."[3] She attended schools in New York City, London, New Zealand, Rome and Australia, one of them being Sibford School, a boarding school in Oxfordshire, England. Her parents divorced when she was seven and she made her film debut at the age of eight in Listen, followed, at 12, by her mother's short film "The Water Diary".[2] She left high school to become an actress.[3]
2010–present
Englert is featured in epic romance time travel adventure film The Lovers, which was showcased at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. The film was released on DVD in the UK as Time Traveller in 2016.[5] In 2012, Englert starred in Ginger & Rosa, opposite Elle Fanning.[1] In 2013, she starred in the low-budget horror film In Fear, and in the supernatural romance film Beautiful Creatures, which was based upon the novel of the same name by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.[6] A poet and singer, Englert's self-penned song "Needle and Thread" was used in the film.[7] In an interview, Englert stated that she "recorded ["Needle and Thread"] in the bathroom of the apartment I was staying in the warehouse district of New Orleans."[7]
