Alec Chien
Alec Chien is an award-winning pianist from Hong Kong.
Born in Hong Kong, Chien earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees at The Juilliard School where he studied under Adele Marcus. He was prized at the II Sydney and the VIII 1982 Santander's Paloma O'Shea (4th prize). He won Gold Medal at the 1986 Gina Bachauer Competition, which led to an intercontinental concert career.[1] Two years later he was selected by Steinway & Sons as one of 25 artists to perform at Carnegie Hall in the celebrations of the firm's 135th anniversary as well as its 500,000th piano. Dr. Chien has performed in solo recitals, chamber music and concertos on four continents, in countries such as Australia, Austria, China, Greece, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Poland, Spain and Taiwan. Among the major orchestras with which he has been concerto soloist are the Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Utah Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, New Zealand Symphony, American Symphony and Hong Kong Philharmonic. In chamber music, he has collaborated with the Alexander String Quartet, the Cavani String Quartet, the Ariel Woodwinds Quintet, members of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic.
Alec Chien previously served as an Artist-in-Residence, Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Department at Allegheny College. He has taught humanities and music courses while providing instruction to piano students. He performs periodic concerts at the college, including performances with the Erie (PA) Philharmonic Orchestra. Now retired, Alec frequently teaches at Carnegie Mellon University and serves as the Chair of a local non-profit organization, the Meadville Neighborhood Center.
Alec Chien currently resides in Meadville, Pennsylvania with his wife, Brenda, and his three daughters, Brianna, Mikayla and Bethany.
