Life

Schellenberg first attended schools in Bülach. Then, he completed the Kantonsschule Zürcher Unterland by passing Matura type C exams in 1979. Afterwards, he studied economics at the University of Zurich, where he graduated in 1986. From 1986 to 1991 he was an assistant at the Institute for Business Research at the University of Zurich.[1] In 1991, He wrote the doctorate under the supervision of Edwin Rühli, receiving Dr. oec. publ. (Doctor of Economics) title in 1991. Later on, from 1992 to 2011, he was an owner of a business consultant company[3] which is now run by his wife.[4] His opinion on the public prosecutor's office in the Swissair process[5] contained arithmetical errors and was described by the court as invaluable.[6] In addition, from 2003 to 2011, he was a Bern University's lecturer at the Institute for Corporate Accounting and Controlling. From 2006 to 2009 he completed a postgraduate degree in Commercial law at Bern University, resulting in a LL.M. [3]

As of 1 July 2010, Schellenberg worked 60% as commander of the Swiss Army's Mountain Infantry Brigade 12.[7] On January 1, 2012, he was promoted to Major general as chief of staff of the army.[8]

On 1 January 2013, he succeeded Markus Gygax as commander of the Swiss Air Force.[9] At its meeting on 22 March 2017, the Swiss Federal Council decided to promote Schellenberg to the Chief Operations of the Swiss Army on 1 January 2018.[10] It is expected that Bernhard Müller will substitute him as head of Swiss Air Force.

In spring 2016, new Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin stopped the procurement of a new air defense system. The project group headed by Korpskommandant Schellenberg proposed a system which did not fulfill the duties of the task.[11][12]
