The term Alawi (Arabic: علوي), also rendered Alewi, Alevi, Alawid, or Alawite (French: Alaouite), is an Arabic word meaning something of or related to Ali – the Prophet Muhammad's nephew and son-in-law – a revered figure in both Sunni and Shia Islam. At its root an adjective, the word has become a noun as it is used as a name by individuals, families, dynasties, and religious sects and organizations who identify as being either, descendants of, or followers of, Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib.
