Al Nasraniya (Arabic: النصرانية) is a village[1] in Qatar, located in the municipality of Al-Shahaniya.[2] It was demarcated in 1988.[1] It used to be part of the Al Jemailiya municipality before the municipality was incorporated into Al Rayyan.[3] In 2014, the settlement was incorporated into the newly-created Al-Shahaniya Municipality.[4]

Etymology

Nasraniya was named after a local well. Because the well was built on rocky, solid ground, locals had to dig deep under the surface for the well to function. Once the well was working, it was a described as a victory, and the locals decided to name the well 'Nasraniya' (Christianity), in reference to the victory of the Muslims against Christianity in the Arabian Peninsula.[5]

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, the settlement comprised 288 housing units[6] and 149 establishments.[7] There were 1,043 people living in the settlement, of which 80% were male and 20% were female. Out of the 1,043 inhabitants, 84% were 20 years of age or older and 16% were under the age of 20. The literacy rate was 89.2%.[8]

Employed persons made up 77% of the total population. Females accounted for 10% of the working population, while males accounted for 90% of the working population.[8]
