Adilabad District is a district located in the northern region of the Indian state of Telangana. It is the gateway district to South and Central India.[2] Adilabad is the administrative seat of the district.[3]

Epigraphical records

Some Telugu inscriptions of historical importance have been found in Adilabad District during Kakatiya rule.[4]

History

Historically, Adilabad was known as Edlabad during the rule of Qutub Shahis.[5]

The heavilly-forested Godavari basin[6] was inhabited during the Mesolithic and Paleolithic periods. Excavations have taken place in surrounding areas of Luxettipet, Asifabad, Boath, Bhainsa and Nirmal.[7]

Due to the district's re-organization in October 2016, Adilabad was divided into Asifabad district, Mancherial district and Nirmal district.[2]

Geography

The district, bordered to the North by Yavatmal district, to theNorth East by Chandrapur district, on the East by Asifabad district, on the South East by Mancherial district, to the South by Nirmal district, and to the West by Nanded district of Maharashtra state, occupies an area of 4,153 square kilometres (1,603 sq mi).[3]

As of the 2011 Census of India, Adilabad district has a population of 708,972.[3]

Religions

Badankurti[8] village in Khanapur mandal of Adilabad district was explored and remnants of a Buddhist monastery were found on a small island of Godavari river near Badankurthi. The town of Bhainsa, probably related to early Buddhist times, as a pair of carved feet near a mound[9] were found.

Ethnicities

The major tribal ethnicities present in the area are the Adivasis, Gonds, Kolams, Pardhans and Thotties.[10]

Economy

In 2006, the Indian government named Adilabad as one of the 250 most backward districts (out of a total of 640) in the country.[11] It is one of the districts in Telangana currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).[11]
