This album marks the first appearances by co-lead vocalist Tilian Pearson, bass guitarist Tim Feerick, and guitarist Josh Benton, who left the band shortly after the album's release. This is also the first Dance Gavin Dance album to not have production handled by Kris Crummett.
A music video for "Strawberry Swisher, Pt. 3" was released October 31, 2013.[6]
A previously unreleased track from the Acceptance Speech recording sessions entitled "Pussy Vultures" was released September 19, 2014.
Artwork
The Acceptance Speech cover art features a pen drawing by artist Mattias Adolfsson, who has also provided the artwork for all of the band's previous studio albums, and it bears a particular stylistic resemblance to the cover art of 2009's Happiness.

Critical reception
The album received mixed to positive reviews from critics, with praise being directed towards certain aspects of the album. However, Tilian Pearson's vocals received lukewarm reviews, along with the unique mix of genres. Deadpress concluded their review by saying "what we have here is a refreshing DGD who’ve managed to maintain their identity regardless, and maybe we’ll also have a consistent line-up for the foreseeable future" and gave the album a rating of eight out of ten.[4]
Criticism was leveled against the production and lyrical content, as Adam Thomas from sputnikmusic went on to say "...but at the end of the day Mess' lyrical prowess is so far beyond hit or miss that it is just absurd." [2]
