Background
Abbas Ansari has a very rich background when it comes to his family history, he is the great grandson to Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari[6] who was an Indian nationalist and political leader, and former president of the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League during the Indian Independence Movement. One of the founders of the Jamia Millia Islamia University he remained its Chancellor 1928 to 1936.[7]
Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari's grand nephew Mohammad Hamid Ansari is the 12th and current Vice President of India, in office since 2007. Ansari is the only person to get re-elected for the post of Vice President of India after Dr. Radhakrishnan.[8] He also presently serves as President of the Indian Institute of Public Administration and Chancellor of Panjab University, Chandigarh.
Abbas's grandmother's father Mohammad Usman[9] was the highest ranking officer of Indian Army killed in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947, who as a Muslim became a "symbol of" India's "inclusive secularism".[10] At the time of partition of India he with many other officers declined to move to the Pakistan Army and continued to serve the Indian Army.[11] He was martyred in July 1948 while fighting the Pakistani soldiers and militia in Jammu and Kashmir.[11] He was later awarded the second highest military decoration for gallantry in the face of enemy, the Maha Vir Chakra[12][13]
Mohammad Usman's son Abdul Hamid (soldier) [14] was a soldier in the 4th Battalion, The Grenadiers of the Indian Army, who died in the Khem Karan sector during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 in the Battle of Asal Uttar, and was the posthumous recipient of the Republic of India's highest military decoration, the Param Vir Chakra. "Never in the history of warfare have so many tanks been destroyed by any infantry man-a feat achieved by CGMH Abdul Hamid of 4 grenadiers who destroyed eight pakistani patton tanks with this 106 Recoilless gun before laying down his life for the nation. He was awared Param Vir Chakra Posthumously for his daring act."[15]
Abbas's father Mukhtar Ansari, uncle Afzal Ansari & Sibakatullah Ansari have been very active in the Indian politics and have held various position in Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly.[16]
