Abbalagere is a village in the southern state of Karnataka, India.[1][2] It is located in the Shimoga taluk of Shimoga district in Karnataka.
Abbalagere was previously a Tobacco growing village, but now farmers are growing more Aracanut and plantation crops. Paddy, maize, vegetables are major crops. Most of farmers in the village are medium land holders. The village is close to Shimoga city, so many employees commute daily between the city and the village for work.
Abbalagere is located on Shimoga-Hanagal State highway, the road which passes through Savalunga, Shikaripura. There are many educational institutes near Abbalagere such as Jawaharlal Nehru National Engineering College, Bapuji Ayurvedic College, University
Now abbalagere is inching towards shimoga corporation, University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, shimoga is situated just 1 kilometers from Abbalagere. Temples present in Abbalagere are Sri.Ujjineshwaraswamy temple, Ganesha temple, Choudamma temple, Muruda Basaveshwara temple, Bhavi mallappa temple are major ones. One Government primary school and one government high school also located at Abbalagere. Abbalagere and Hunasodu joint villages very nearer to each other just within 1 km distance. Abbalagere also circle place for Hunsodu-, kalgangur, mathodu, belalkatte, gejjenahalli-, Hanasvadi- villages. The village have mixed caste populations involves more lingayath, Tamilians, Schedule caste Banjar peoples and other mixed caste peoples. Ujjineshwara temple famous for its every 3-5 year festival "parav". Earlier Sahukar K.Devirappa contributed through improvement of socio- economic, agarian sections upliftment of life of peoples.He fight to get good financial remuneration to farmers from government of Karnataka, who lost their land for upper tunga irrigation project during year 2004-06. Politically Abbalagere under Shimoga rural assembly and shimoga lokasabha constituency. Nearly 1500-1800 voters registered up to 2015. Abbalagere has its own village(Gram) panchayath. Land prices somewhat costly since nearer to shimoga. City bus in operation since from 1994 to till today single city bus running 7 times per day between Gopala-Busstand-Jayanagar-Navile-Abbalagere- Hunsodu-. route. All private buses from shimoga private Busstand to flying towards savalunga, nyamathi,ShikRipura,Soraba,honnali, Holalur route are stopping at Abbalagere.
Abbalgere earlier famous for Tobacco Production. Because of good light sandy soils in village, farmers use to grow good tobacco. There is also Central Tobacco market yard situated in the village from many years. But recently in year 2006-07 Former PM, MP of Hassan H D Devegowda (also member of Central Tobacco board at that period) shift the tobacco market to his own district Hassan (Ramanathapuram) from Abbalagere, Shimoga. After shiting Tobacco market all farmers in shimoga, Chikmaglur, Davangere left the Tobacco growing.
