Aaron Stonehouse (born 29 June 1990) is an Australian politician. He was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Council at the 2017 state election, as a Liberal Democratic Party member in South Metropolitan Region. His term began on 22 May 2017.[1]
Writing in The Spectator shortly after his election, Stonehouse outlined his platform as being the support of free markets, saying that he would "not vote for increases in taxes, or new laws that add to the burden of regulation".[2]
Mr Stonehouse has is also on record as having called for the legalisation of marijuana in WA, as well as a relaxation of the regulations pertaining to the carrying of tasers and pepper spray.[3] As of the 2017 state election, Mr Stonehouse was the youngest member to have been elected to the WA Parliament in over 20 years.[4]
In June 2017, he famously compared WA Premier Mark McGowan to Maude Flanders for wanting to limit alcohol sales at the new Perth Stadium to mid-strength beers, stating that “The Western Australian people elected the McGowan Government to build road and rail links, run hospitals and get the budget under control. Not to play the role of Ned Flanders’ wife at footy matches,” and describing the Premier's intervention "peak nanny state." [5]
