Aarhus Letbane (Aarhus light rail) is a tram and tram-train system under construction in the city of Aarhus, Denmark since September 2013.[3] Parts of the line were planned to open in May 2017, while the rest was expected to open in the autumn 2017[4], as of August 2017 no public services were running.
Aarhus Letbane is the first light rail system in Denmark.[5] It will be operated by the company midttrafik.[4]
Plan
The project is inspired by trams in Kassel in Germany.[3]
Phase 1 is a 12 km double-track tramway running from Aarhus H station, via Skejby and Lisbjerg to Lystrup.[3] The existing Odderbanen railway from Aarhus to Odder and Grenaabanen to Grenaa will be adapted for tram-train services.[3] Phase 1 will be a total of 110 kilometres long when completed.[6]
Expansion plans includes a branch to Lisbjerg West.[3]
Rolling stock
Contract has been signed about delivery of two types of trams:[7]
- Stadler Tango: max speed 100 km/h, used between Grenaa and Aarhus H station.
- Stadler Variobahn: max speed 80 km/h, used between Odder and Lystrup.
