Presidential primaries for the ANO 2011 party are scheduled to be held in 2017 to choose the party's candidate for the 2018 presidential elections.[1][2] They will determine whether the party will select its own candidate or support incumbent president Miloš Zeman of the Party of Civic Rights.[3] Other candidates, including Michal Horáček or Jiří Drahoš, may also be included in the voting.[4]
Andrej Babiš stated that primaries will be held after legislative elections in October 2017.[5]
Possible candidates
- Jiří Drahoš, Physical chemist and Chairman of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Andrej Babiš noted that he could be included in the primaries.[4] He is reported to have the private support of some prominent members of ANO 2011.[6]
- Michal Horáček, independent presidential candidate. Andrej Babiš noted that he could be included in the primaries.[4]
- Martin Stropnický, Minister of Defence. His candidacy was suggested by Andrej Babiš.[7] On April 8, Babiš stated that he will not support Stropnický even if he becomes the party's candidate. Babiš also said that Stropnický does not want to run, though Stropnický himself did not rule out his candidacy.[8]
- Miloš Zeman, incumbent president. It is possible that members will be allowed to choose to support Zeman instead of selecting a candidate from within the party.[9]
Declined
- Věra Jourová, EU Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, was suggested as a possible candidate but declined to run.[10]
