- 1 December 2016 to 21 January 2017 – The 2016–2017 Gambian constitutional crisis started after the presidential elections on 1 December 2016, and ended with the outgoing president Yahya Jammeh being forced to step down in favour of his elected successor Adama Barrow on 21 January 2017, after resistance.
- 19 January – the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2337 was unanimously adopted by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).[1]
- 19-20 January – ECOWAS military intervention in the Gambia
- 6 April – scheduled date for the Gambian parliamentary election, 2017
The Gambia has begun the process of returning to its status as a Commonwealth republic
