- 4 January – Sorin Grindeanu takes over as Prime Minister of Romania.
- 24 January – President Klaus Iohannis initiates proceedings for a national referendum on continuing the fight against corruption in Romania.
- 29 January – Tens of thousands of people march in the largest protest since the Revolution against a government's plan to roll out a pardon bill that would see several thousands prisoners get out of jail earlier due to the reduction of their sentences.
- 5 February – The government repealed the ordinance bill that caused the protests.
- 8 February – Justice Minister Florin Iordache resigns.
