On 1 August 2017, two armed men entered a Shi'ite mosque, named "Jadwadia" in Herat, Afghanistan during evening prayer, and one of the them wearing suicide jacket detonated himself followed the firearms shooting by the other. The attack left 30 people dead while 64 were injured. No group have claimed responsibility for the attack.

Background

The attack came 2 days after an attack on Iraqi embassy in Kabul.[1] A week before there was an incident of bombing that left 24 people dead and 24 injured.[2]

Attack

At arround 20:00 (UTC + 04:30), two men one of them wearing suicide vest and the other armed with rifle entered the mosque which was hosting more than 300 people at the time.[3] They thrown hand grenades and fired on the worshipers before the suicide blew himself up.[4] 29 people were killed while 64 others were injured. Security officials said that both the attackers had been killed.[5] "The mosque was badly damaged with windows blown out, walls and even the large dome peppered with shrapnel and everywhere was blood from the victims", said Hadid, an eyewitness.[6]

Responsibility

No group have claimed responsibility for the attack. A spokesman for Taliban, Qari Mohammad Yousuf said the group had no hand behind the attack.[7]
