Motive Baloch Nationalism

On May 13, 2017, two militants of Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) riding on a motorcycle opened fire on group of labors working in Gwadar, Balochistan, Pakistan. The road where these labors were working was a specific CPEC-funded projects, but they are part of a network of connecting roads that are part of the corridor.[1] The firing resulted in, death of 10 labors. A spokesman for BLA claimed responsibility of attack.[2]

Shooting

The two gunman fired on labors at Pishgan and Gant, two different places 20 kilometers apart from each other.[3] 8 labors died at the spot and two were severely injured whom also succumbed to death while they were brought to hospital, raising the death toll to 10.[4] According to an eyewitness, two gunmen came from Pashkun area and they were talking in Balochi. A C-130 aircraft of Pakistan Air Force was used to flew the labors to their native areas after funeral which was offered in Senetor Marwoon Ishaq Cricket ground at around 3 pm.[5] Law enforcement agencies rushed to the cite of attack and started search operation.[6]

Victims

Nine of the ten labors were identified as Muhammad Khan, Ali Dost, Shuban, Abdul Hakim, Rasool Bakhsh, Waheed, Zaheer and Sadam. The surviving worker was identified as Hazoor Bakhsh.[7] All of them were Sindhi.

Reactions

Chief Minister of Balochistan, Sanaullah Zehri condemned the attack saying, "“Such coward attacks can’t prevent development and prosperity in Gwadar and Balochistan".[8]
