All statistics correct as of 9 August 2017. |
The 2017–18 season is Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 114th season in existence and the club's 84th consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football. The pre-season started on 30 June 2017 and concluded after the Emirates Cup.[1] The regular season started on 5 August, with the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira match, and will conclude in May 2018.[2]
Benfica play in the Primeira Liga for the first time as a four-time defending champions, since the club retained the domestic league supremacy in the previous campaign. Additionally, Benfica will also participate in the Taça de Portugal, as the reigning title holders, and in the Taça da Liga. Internationally, Benfica will compete in the UEFA Champions League for the eight time in a row.
Season overview
On 29 June 2017, Luís Filipe Vieira gave the motto for the coming season ("Rumo ao Penta") and promised a renewed ambition to conquer an unprecedented fifth Primeira Liga title in a row for Benfica.[3] On the following day, Rui Vitória explained his approach to the new season: "We know that there's a goal previously assumed by the President and the best way to achieve it is to go on together, like it was the first time. It is fundamental to have the first time ambition. Humble and focused so that it can happen."[4]
Pre-season
The pre-season started on 30 June 2017 with the usual medical exams and physical tests in Caixa Futebol Campus and Hospital da Luz. For the first twelve days of July, the work schedule took place in the training ground. For the team's commitments, the program included the Uhrencup, a five-day stay in Algarve with two matches, and a stage at St George's Park, from 23 to 28 July, before the Emirates Cup.[1] Benfica finished third in the Switzerland tournament after a heavy defeat against Young Boys.[5] The team redeemed itself with a victory in the Algarve Football Cup, thanks to a brace by the newly signed Haris Seferović. On 26 July, Benfica played a behind closed doors training ground friendly against Swindon Town which ended 2–1; Seferović and Andrija Živković scored the goals for Benfica.[6] Once again, Benfica stood powerless in the Emirates Cup; by losing both matches, the team repeated the 4th place achieved in 2014. Due to Chapecoense's cancellation, Benfica did not host the Eusébio Cup for the first time since the first edition in 2008.
Benfica lost three players from the starting eleven: on 1 June, Ederson signed with Manchester City for €40 million; Victor Lindelöf left for Manchester United for €35 million on 14 June; Nélson Semedo moved for Barcelona, on 14 July, for €30.5 million.
As with the previous season, Benfica kept struggling with player injuries.[7] On 17 June, Álex Grimaldo did not take part in Spain's squad for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship because of a "little injury" and, thus, missed the start of Benfica's pre-season.[8] Filip Krovinović was submitted to surgery on 23 June, nine days after signing contract, in order to correct a left inguinal hernia.[9] He was one of three players absent from the squad who traveled to Switzerland, alongside Luisão (right knee injury) and Eduardo Salvio (right tibiotarsal joint sprain).[10] André Almeida suffered a contusion in his right thigh, which prevented him from travelling to Algarve.[11]
Supertaça
For the opening match of the regular season, Benfica had five players on the injury list: Júlio César, Andrija Živković, André Carrillo, André Horta and Konstantinos Mitroglou.[12] Samaris was not an option either, since he was serving the first of a 4-match suspension for having punched Moreirense's player Diego Ivo on 9 April 2017.[13] Benfica defeated Vitória de Guimarães 3–1. Jonas, Seferović and Raúl Jiménez scored for Benfica and Raphinha scored for Vitória de Guimarães. It was the first time Benfica managed to win back-to-back Supertaça titles. Seferović made his debut for Benfica and Bruno Varela, a former Benfica B player, participated in his first main team match, after being called up to the bench several times in the past.[14][15] Grimaldo suffered a muscular injury on his right leg and was substituted for Eliseu in the 75th minute.[16]

Kit information
- Home: Inspired by a model used in the 1960s, this kit is vivid red and features a classical design with a white polo collar and white sleeve cuffs. On the front, the manufacturer logo and the iconic sponsor phrase "Fly Emirates" are both white, as well as the beer brand logo on the back. The shirt also presents an embroidered symbol at the bottom, allusive to the 75th birthday of Eusébio.[23] The shorts are white and the socks are in the same red shade as the shirt's. The first appearance of this kit was against Neuchâtel Xamax on 13 July.[24]
- Away: The away kit features two tones of grey, with the body of the shirt being lighter and the sleeves and necktie (V-neck) darker. The three white Adidas' stripes are displayed vertically along the sides of the shirt. The club's badge is monochromatic and, just like in the previous seasons, it has the three stars above, each representing 10 league titles won by the club.[25] The shorts are dark grey and the socks are predominantly light grey, with the exception of a horizontal stripe. The first appearance of this kit was against Real Betis on 20 July.[26]
- Keeper: One of the goalkeeper's outfits is white with black detailing, such as the necktie and the sponsors words on the shirt, or the Adidas' logo and their trademark three stripes, both on the shirt's soulders and on the shorts.Júlio César
Pre-season
On 26 April 2017, it was announced that Benfica would take part in the Emirates Cup.[27] It was the club's second participation in the tournament, after the presence in 2014.[28] On 17 May, the schedule for the Uhrencup was announced; Benfica played against Neuchâtel Xamax and Young Boys.[29] On 20 July, Benfica faced Real Betis in the Algarve Football Cup.[30][31] On 30 June, Benfica announced their pre-season program, which included a standalone friendly match against Hull City on 22 July.[1]
A match between Benfica and Chapecoense was announced on 21 April, as part of the annual Eusébio Cup, but it was canceled on 13 June due to incompatibilities with the Brazilian's team schedule, according to the Brazilian Football Confederation.[32]
