The 2016–17 season was Nottingham Forest's 151st season in existence and 9th consecutive season in the Championship since promotion in 2007–08.[2] In addition to the Championship, the club participated in the FA Cup and the newly rebranded EFL Cup. The season covers the period from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017.

Forest began the season with a new manager, having appointed former Rennes and Real Sociedad manager Philippe Montanier as head coach on 27 June 2016.[3] Montanier was dismissed on 14 January to be replaced on 14 March by former Brentford and Rangers manager Mark Warburton.[4] In the two months between, the club's first team responsibilities were handed to academy manager Gary Brazil and under-23's head coach Jack Lester.[5]

Former Fiorentina Sporting Director Pedro Pereira was appointed as Director of Football on 16 June, although he departed the club in October after only four months in the position.[6] Shortly after Pereira's departure Forest's Financial Director, Lalou Tifrit, also left the club.[7] On 19 January Samantha Gordon joined Forest in the capacity of Chief Financial Officer, as a direct replacement for Tifrit.[8] On 3 March former Liverpool academy director and Rangers head of recruitment Frank McParland was appointed as the club's Director of Football, five months after the departure of Pereira.[9]

On 18 May a change of ownership of Nottingham Forest Football Club from Fawaz Al-Hasawi to a Greek consortium, led by Olympiacos owner and shipping magnate Evangelos Marinakis, was completed as Al-Hasawi sold 100% of his stake in the club for an undisclosed sum. Marinakis completed the deal with Sokratis Kominakis, and the duo immediately announced upon the deal's completion the appointments of leading sports lawyer Nicholas Randall QC as Chairman, Managing Director of Olympiacos Ioannis Vrentzos as CEO, and former Celtic Head of Business Development David Cook as Chief Commercial Officer. It was also announced that McParland, now fulfilling the role of Sport Director, would have his contract extended and that Gordon would retain her role as Chief Financial Officer.[10][11] On 27 May, long-serving Steve Sutton left his role as Goalkeeping Coach to be replaced by former Scotland international Jim Stewart, whom Warburton had worked with at Rangers.[12][13]
