On 13 October 2013, riots broke out in Moscow's southern Biryulyovo district after it was announced that Egor Shcherbakov, a 25-year-old man, was killed allegedly by a migrant who "might have come from Central Asia or the Caucasus" on 10 October.[3][4] The footage of the man being stabbed was circulated in the news agenices. The previous day, some 40 people gathered to demand justice.[1] The police announced a reward of 1 million rubles (~$30,975) for any information about the suspect.[4]

The riots turned violent as the protesters, a "mixed crowd of nationalists and locals", attacked properties owned by immigrants.[1]

On 14 October, the police arrested more than 1,200 migrant workers where the killer allegedly lived.[5]

On 15 October, Orkhan Zeynalov, an Azerbaijani citizen, was arrested as a suspect for killing Egor Shcherbakov in Kolomna, not far from Moscow.[6][7]
