A Fokker 27, owned by the Indonesian Air Force, crashed into a housing complex during approach into Jakarta on 21 June 2012. The aircraft was on a training flight on the day of the crash. Six of the seven crewmembers on board died immediately;[1] the copilot succumbed to his injuries later, while four people on the ground were also killed, with 11 other people injured.[2][3][4]

Investigation

F-27 was on a training flight when it crashed while trying to land.[5] Military spokesman Rear Adm. Iskandar Sitompul said the F-27 was on a training flight when it crashed. The aircraft was declared airworthy before training and skies were clear, he added.[6] Officials previously said that the aircraft crew had been conducting a touch-and-go exercise before the crash.[7] The aircraft was not equipped with flight data recording equipment, also known a black box. Earlier on Thursday, Yunus said the Fokker aircraft was on a routine training mission at the base before the incident.[8]

Aircraft

The plane was built in 1958 and used by Air Force for the past several years.[5] TNI has said that it is in the process of procuring CN-295s to replace its Fokker F-27s.[7]
