September 7: Tropical Depression formed, later it would be Hurricane Fred, the system was located roughly 160 mi (260 km) south of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands.^[3]Several hours before being declared a tropical depression, the precursor to Fred produced moderate rainfall and gusty winds across the southern Cape Verde Islands, in the city of Praia, Cape Verde, only a trace of rain, less than 2.5 mm fell on September 7 and sustained winds reached 35 km/h.^[4]
September 8:
- French President Nicolas Sarkozy made another technical stop on his way back to France from Brazil
- Increased winds and heavy rains from the tropical depression led to the cancellation of two flights and several others were delayed.^[5]
- The tropical depression became Tropical Storm Fred, later it became Hurricane Fred and moved west of Cape Verde
December 22: São Pedro Airport (now Cesária Évora Airport became an international airport, it was the fourth after Boavista's and Sotavento's recent, it was opened by the Prime Minister and president of São Vicente Isaura Gomes.
