Venus Williams was the two-time defending champion and was attempting to become the first player to win the women's singles tournament three consecutive times since Steffi Graf (1991–93),^[1] but lost to her sister Serena Williams in the final 7–6^(7–3), 6–2. This was Serena's third Wimbledon singles title and eleventh Grand Slam singles title overall.^[1] It was also the third time she had won a Grand Slam title after saving a match point against her, in the semifinals against Elena Dementieva.^[2]

This edition of the tournament saw the top four seeds all reach the semifinals, for the second time in four years after 2006. The semifinal match between Serena Williams and Dementieva was the longest women's semifinal at Wimbledon in the Open era, lasting two hours and 49 minutes.^[3]
