Venus Williams was the defending champion, and won in the final 7–5, 6–4, against her sister Serena Williams. This was Venus's fifth Wimbledon title and her seventh Grand Slam singles title overall.^[1] This was also the second time she won a Grand Slam tournament without losing a set.

Zheng Jie became the first Chinese player of either sex to reach a Grand Slam singles semifinal, having defeated the world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic en-route in the third round.^[2] With the other top four seeds—Jelena Janković, Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova—also losing in the first four rounds, it marked the first time in Wimbledon history that none of the top four women's seeds had advanced to at least the quarterfinals.^[3]
