- Cape Verdean Atmospherical Observatory: Humberto Duarte Fonseca, named after Humberto Duarte Fonseca opened, it was a bilateral initiative by Germany and the United Kingdom and is located in the area of Ribeira do Calhau.[1]
- The World Monument Fund named Tarrafal Camp one of its 100 watched monuments.[2]
- January 3: Escola de Formação Profisional Variante, a law school opened in São Domingos on the island of Santiago[3]
- January 22 - Cape Verdean parliamentary election, 2006
- February 12 - Cape Verdean presidential election, 2006
- March 29 - A total solar eclipse took place after 8:00, it showed at about 50% obscuration of the sun in the archipelago
- May 24 - The island dam named Poilão west of Pedra Badejo (Santiago Island) completed, the first dam or reservoir in Cape Verde[4]
- May and June: NATO maneuvers occurred on the island, 7,800 troops took part in Operation Jaguar[5]
- June: Paul became twinned with Gavião, Portugal
- July 1: SAA operated its final flight to Sal due to the ending of its flights to Atlanta, Georgia in the US
- August 22: Tropical Storm Debby passed through Cape Verde, the eye of the storm was 225 km southwest of Brava,[6] windseeds on Fogo was 55 km/h and had some rainfall.[7]
- September 22 - An annular solar eclipse took place at 9:30, it showed at around 50% obscuration of the sun in the archipelago
- November 13: Sociedade Cabo-verdiana de Cerveja e Refrigerantes, a national beverage company replaced CERIS[8]
- November 21: University of Cape Verde established[9]
