1989 Minsk October Revolution Parade
The 1989 Minsk October Revolution Parade was a parade that took place on Lenin Square[1] in Minsk on November 7, 1989 in honor of the 72nd anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution.[1] Yefrem Sokolov who was the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Belarusian SSR and Mikhail Kovalyov the Prime Minister of the republic were some of the leaders of the Belarusian SSR attending. It would be the last parade in the BSSR's existence.Inspecting the parade would be the head of the Belorussian Military District and later the Defence Minister of Belarus Colonel General Anatoly Kostenko.[2] The parade commander was Chief of Staff of the district Colonel General Alexander Chumakin.[3]The Central Band of the Belarusian Military District, which is a branch of the Military Band Service of the Armed Forces of the USSR provided the music for the parade.

However, in 1984, due to the construction of the Minsk Palace of the Republic on October Square, parades were moved to this area in the video, Lenin Square. Lenin Square was renamed Independence Square in 1991, but remained the parade/demonstration venue until 1998 when the square was rebuilt. The rebuild saw fountains and topiary beds installed to where it made the area unfit for the movement of military personnel and equipment. So after 1998, the parades were moved to Prospekt Masherov (named after Belarusian Party Secretary Pyotr Masherov) where they remain today. Prospekt Masherov is where the complex "Minsk Hero-City" is located, giving special meaning to Belarusian parades, since the July 3rd Independence Day parade doesn't celebrate independence from the USSR, rather liberation BY the USSR from the Nazis in 1944.".
