Mats Wilander was the defending champion, but was upset in the second round by unseeded Ramesh Krishnan.

Ivan Lendl defeated Miloslav Mečíř 6–2 6–2 6–2 in the final to win the Men's Singles title at the 1989 Australian Open.

This was the first Australian Open in which future world number one Pete Sampras competed in the main draw.
