FDGB-Pokal Round 3
UEFA Cup Semi-final
Top goalscorer Torsten Gütschow (17)

The 1988–89 season saw Dynamo Dresden win their first East German championship in ten years, ending the domination of Berliner FC Dynamo, who had each of the past ten titles. Dynamo finished eight points ahead of their nearest rivals BFC, losing only two league games. Coincidentally, these both came against their Saxon rivals FC Karl-Marx-Stadt, who also eliminated Dresden from the East German cup in the third round.

Dynamo also had their most successful ever European campaign, reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in a run which saw them beat Italian giants AS Roma home and away before being eliminated by West German side VfB Stuttgart. Andreas Trautmann was named as East German Footballer of the Year, while Torsten Gütschow was the leading goalscorer in both the DDR-Oberliga and UEFA Cup, with 17 and 7 goals respectively.
