The 1981–82 2. Bundesliga season was the eighth season of the 2. Bundesliga, the second tier of the German football league system. It was the first season with the 2. Bundesliga consisting of a single league, after the abolition of the North and South divisions.
FC Schalke 04 and Hertha BSC were promoted to the Bundesliga while TSV 1860 München, VfR Wormatia Worms, Freiburger FC and SpVgg Bayreuth were relegated to the Oberliga.
Final standings
For the 1981–82 season saw no team promoted to the 2. Bundesliga from the Oberliga because of the league reduction from two to one division while Bayer Uerdingen, TSV 1860 München and FC Schalke 04 had been relegated to the league from the Bundesliga.

Promotion/relegation playoff
The final place in the Bundesliga was contested between the third placed team in the 2. Bundesliga (Kickers Offenbach) and the third-last team in the Bundesliga (Bayer Leverkusen). Bayer Leverkusen won on aggregate and retained their Bundesliga status.[1]
