Jimmy Connors defeated Phil Dent 7–6, 6–4, 4–6, 6–3 in the final to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 1974 Australian Open.

Björn Borg competed in this Australian Open for the first and only time in his career. He lost to Dent in the third round.

The format was the same as the previous year with the first round best of 3 sets and the rest of the tournament best of 5 sets.
