- March: The only legislative assembly election took place[1]
- June 30: a total solar eclipse took place with the umbral portion including a part of the island of Santo Antão, over 120 km northwest, a prototype of what would become the Concorde flew in the middle of the umbral portion, it showed around 90-95% obscuration of the sun in the island of São Vicente, it was 95% obscured around Boa Vista and over 90% in the Sotavento Islands.
- December 24: an annular solar eclipse occurred on the island before 15:30, the umbral portion was shown in that area while the remainder was shown partial
