The 1969–70 Iraq FA Premier League was the 15th season of what is now known as the League of the Institutes (the top division of Iraqi football from 1948 to 1974), and was open to teams from Baghdad. Aliyat Al-Shorta became the first team in Iraqi football history to win three league titles in a row, and this was the fourth title in the history of the Police clubs that were merged to form Al-Shorta in 1974. Aliyat Al-Shorta's title win qualified them for the 1971 Asian Champion Club Tournament (now known as the AFC Champions League), becoming the first ever Iraqi team to qualify for a major continental club competition.[1]
