- Famine continued to struck the archipelago for the second year (see Famine in Cape Verde), in the island of Santiago, the hardest was Ribeira da Barca which made people to move to São Tomé and Príncipe, Dakar and some European countries
- Sal Island: The Portuguese purchased the airport installations from the Italians, the Portuguese constructed the rest of Sal Airport, today known as Amílcar Cabral International Airport
- May 20: a total solar eclipse took place after 1 PM (13:00) local time, it showed from 50% (at Santo Antão) to about 58% (at Santiago) obscuration of the sun in the archipelago[1]

- Codé di Dona' singe "Fome de 47" first sang, it was related to the famine that happened that year
- February: 4th issue of Claridade review published

- Mindelense won the 9th regional title for the island of São Vicente[2]
