The 1923 Tempe Normal Bulldogs football team was an American football team that represented Tempe Normal School (later renamed Arizona State University) as an independent during the 1923 college football season. In their first season under head coach Aaron McCreary, the Bulldogs compiled a 4–2 record and outscored their opponents by a combined total of 152 to 102.[1] Tempe Normal's team captain was John Turner. The Bulldogs finished (1-1) at home and (3-1) on the road. All home games were played at Normal Field in Tempe, Arizona. Coach McCreary graduated from Tempe Normal School in 1915 and had thereafter been in charge of athletics at Tucson High School.[2]
Season Summary
In the season opener at Normal Field, the Tempe Normal Bulldogs suffered a 19-0 home shutout loss to Phoenix Union High School. The Bulldogs rebounded with an impressive 47-0 road shutout victory over the Phoenix Indians. Tempe Normal defeated the Phoenix Indians' 2nd team 61-6 on the road. This marked the first and only meeting between the teams in school history. The Bulldogs dropped a 57-2 road contest at Phoenix College. Tempe Normal bounced back with an 18-14 home win against the Phoenix Indians in Tempe. The Bulldogs closed the season with 24-6 road victory over Mesa High School.
