Season 1920–21 was the 44th Scottish football season in which Dumbarton competed at national level, entering the Scottish Football League for the 22nd time and the Scottish Cup for the 33rd time.

Overview

Dumbarton's eighth season in a row in the 'top flight' witnessed a slump in form with a 21st-place finish out of 22, with 24 points, well behind champions Rangers.^[1] In addition to an outflow of some of the team's talent, the inability to score was also a problem, and with just 41 goals to their credit, Dumbarton finishing up as lowest scorers in the league.

In the Scottish Cup, Dumbarton reached the fourth round before losing to Rangers.

Locally, Dumbarton again failed to progress from the sectional stage of the Dumbartonshire Cup and in the Dumbartonshire Charity Cup following a draw with Vale of Leven in the semi final, a replay date could not be arranged and Dumbarton agreed to scratch from the competition.

Finally, a friendly was also played against Rothesay Juniors.

* John Miller would set 3 records during the season. First, the league match against Partick Thistle on 19 August marked Miller's 200th appearance for Dumbarton in all national competitions - the third Dumbarton player to break the 'double century'. Second, his appearance in the league match against Celtic on 2 April was his 226th competitive match for the club - overtaking Alexander Thom's record set in the previous season. And third, the league match against Hearts on 11 April would be Miller's final game for the club - during his eight seasons with the club he set a new record of 228 appearances in all national competitive matches
* George Livingstone was replaced by James Collins as team manager in September 1920.
* 101 goals were scored against Dumbarton in all matches - the fourth time that a 'century' had been conceded during a single season.
