Woo Ji Ho (Korean: 우지호; born September 14, 1992), better known by the stage name Zico (Korean: 지코), is a South Korean rapper. He is the leader of the boy group Block B.[1] He is notable for his successful crossover skills, maintaining an underground reputation with mainstream hip hop appeal even as a Korean idol. He has produced both successful K-pop and Korean hip hop music.[2][3][4]
Career
Pre-debut
Early life
Zico was born in Mapo, Seoul on September 14, 1992.[1] Zico attended Seoul Music High School as a "Vocal Performance Major."[5] In the lyrics of his song "Release," he mentioned that he spent a year studying abroad in both Canada and China, as well as three years in Japan.[6]
Early Underground Rapping Career
Zico started his rapping career by promoting underground. In his early teenage years, he went by the name "Nacseo" (낙서), meaning 'doodle' or 'scribble' in Korean. He and Rap Monster were part of a hip-hop crew.[7][8] He promoted as Nacseo in the Japanese underground hip hop scene alongside crews "Dope Squad" and "Undisputed."[9] Zico has confirmed he auditioned for SM Entertainment as a teen.[10]
Zico officially debuted in a duo with Park Kyung named "The Harmonics" in Korea in 2009 with the digital single "The Letter."[9] He joined Stardom Entertainment in 2009 as well.[11] Zico performed a rap for singer IU's song "Marshmallow." He also performed in Cho PD’s “Expectations for K-Hip Hop,” and Jung Seul Gi’s “Outsiders.”[12]
In 2010 Zico released his first mix tape, "Zico on the Block." The mix tape was well received by the Korean hiphop scene.[13]
2011
Block B
Zico debuted as the leader of Block B on April 15, 2011 with their first promotional single "Freeze." Zico had produced their debut mini-album "Welcome to the Block."[14] The Korean Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and public broadcast channel KBS banned the songs "LOL" and "Did You or Did You Not" from minors. When asked about the banning, Zico said:
"It's not that we don't consider the regulations when we're producing the songs, but I did often think that our freedom of expression was being interrupted. Still, I do acknowledge that as as a producer that creates songs meant for the public, it was a shortcoming of mine to not have paid more attention to the regulations."— Zico, Welcome to the Block Showcase Q&A[15]
Zico was featured in Hyuna's debut mini-album "Bubble Pop!" in the song "Just Follow."[12] He promoted with her on Korean music shows from July to August.[16] Zico attended the MTV EMAs in Belfast, Northern Ireland.[17] On November 27, Zico began hosting the SBS-MTV interactive radio show "Studio C!" with rap duo Mighty Mouth.[18] Zico made an appearance at Swings's "It's My Year II" concert, performing "I'm Still Fly" and "Cocks."

Zico made an appearance in girl group Wink's song "Stay in Shanghai" on Inkigayo on February 19.[19] Zico performed at the "All Force One" hip hop festival on July 21 alongside artists Dok2 and Beenzino.[20] On October 24, Zico was chosen as co-host of SBS-MTV's "The Show" with Block B member P.O.[21][22] In the 2012 Mnet Asian Music Awards he participated in a hip hop collaboration called "Beats Rocks The World" with artists such as Loco(로꼬), DoubleK, Davichi, and Dynamic Duo.[23] In October Zico released a self-produced mixtape called "Zico On The Block 1.5," containing seven tracks.[24] Zico made a cameo appearance in Sistar's Soyou & the Geeks collaborative track "Officially Missing You Too"'s music video.[25] In December it was announced that Zico was helping to produce D-Unit's third mini-album.[26] In 2012 Zico also entered Dong-ah Institute of Media and Arts as a freshman in the "drama" major.[27]
2013
Zico performed at Phantom's concert on May 17 and ONE Hiphop Festival on September 7.[28]
In August Zico was dissed in Deepflow(딥플로우)'s response track to a Control-esque track by Swings(스윙스).[29] Zico and Jay Park were accused of only being in hip hop for the money.[30] Later, rapper Aphelia created a diss track called "Zicontrol" specifically speaking of his frustration with Zico's guaranteed popularity as an idol versus the difficulty of being a hip hop artist alone.[31] Dead'P(데드피), in the track "Rap Game Control," also spoke about the frustration of idols portraying themselves as "hip hop" and the integration of mainstream K-pop culture into the underground hiphop scene.[32]

On October 18, Zico, along with fellow Block B member P.O, participated in the 2014 Spring/Summer Seoul Fashion Week. They both walked the runway in a fashion show for the brand "Dominic's Way" by designer Song Hye-myung (송혜명).[33] He was featured in IZE magazine in the November issue.[34] On November 17 Zico publicly tweeted about how the intrusion of sasaeng fans into his life forced him to constantly change his phone number to avoid their communications.[35] Zico performed at SBS Gayo Daejeon 2013 as part of a collaborative hip-hop stage featuring Tiger JK, Yoon Mirae, and Bizzy and also including B.A.P.'s Bang Yongguk and Eun Jiwon.[36]
2014
In late May, following the Sewol Ferry Disaster, Zico attended the funeral of a fan who had died in the incident and dedicated a rap to her at Block B's "2014 Blockbuster" Concert.[37][38]
In June T-ara's Hyomin released the Brave Brothers-produced mini-album "Make Up" which allegedly plagiarized lyrics from Zico's various mix tapes and previous releases. She denied the allegations saying they were a homage and that she had permission from Zico to use his lyrics. She did not credit him as a songwriter on her mini-album.[39][40]
On July 14 Zico was confirmed to be a new MC of Show! Music Core, a music television program on MBC.[41][42] Zico was a cast member on Fashion King Korea Season 2 which began airing in July.[43] Zico was a headliner at the "2014 Freestyle Day" concert held August 2 at Uniqlo Ax.[44] He also participated on a special stage with Dynamic Duo for the M! Countdown "10th Anniversary Special," performing the song "Friday Night."[45] He produced music for Go Tae Yong's 2015 S/S show at New York Fashion Week September 9 and further collaborated with him for Seoul Fashion Week.[46] Zico headlined "The Hiphop Festa" with Dok2, The Quiett, and Simon D on October 4.[47] He also performed at the "Hiphopplaya Show Weekend," a Korean hip hop festival at the Itaewon Blue Square on October 31.[48] Zico emceed the 2014 Asia Song Festival with Super Junior's Leeteuk and Girl's Day's Minah.[49] He also performed a collaborative stage at that festival with Beast's Hyunseung.[50]
On November 7 Zico released a "debut" single entitled "Tough Cookie" featuring the rapper Don Mills.[51] He was criticized for wearing a jacket emblazoned with an American Confederate flag in the single's accompanying music video and the use of a homophobic slur in the song's lyrics.[52] Zico's label officially addressed the issue saying the homophobic implication of the term had been unintended and that Zico held no prejudice towards sexual minorities.[53] The song immediately reached the top of many real-time Korean music charts.[54]
Zico performed a collaborative stage with Seo Taiji for the 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards, performing the Seo Taiji and Boys' song "Come Back Home."[55]
2015
On February 13, 2015, Zico released "Well Done," his second single, featuring Ja Mezz.[56] The song topped various real-time Korean music charts on the day of its release.[57] In March, Zico provided the track list for Beyond Closet's 2015 S/S runway at New York Fashion Week. He also graduated from the Dong-Ah Institute of Media and Arts with a bachelor's degree.[58]
February 2015 also saw Zico join the cast of the female rap competition show Unpretty Rapstar for the show's second episode as a producer.[59][60] Zico produced the song "Up All Night" for Unpretty Rapstar contestant Yuk Ji Dam;[61] the song's chorus then became a part of the "Say It! Yes or No" skit on the Korean sketch-comedy show Gag Concert.[62] In May 2015, it was announced that Zico would be appear for the entire season of Show Me the Money 4 as a producer with Paloalto of Hi-Lite Records.[63] After a car Zico was riding in crashed July 8 because the manager driving it was drunk,[64] Show Me the Money said it was considering removing him as producer.[65] Zico was cleared of responsibility for the accident by police, however,[66] and the show kept him on.[67]
The song "Turtle Ship" which Zico produced for the show, topped multiple Korean real-time music charts on its July 31 release.[68] "Turtle Ship" was followed by "Moneyflow," which Zico performed on and which topped real-time charts on its release August 7,[69] and "Fear," which reached number one on all eight major real-time music charts following its August 21 release.[70]
In October, Zico released his own version of "Up All Night" titled "Say Yes or No," featuring the rappers Penomeco and The Quiett. The song topped multiple real-time music charts in Korea.[71] The same month Zico was featured on "Traveler", the seventh track of F(x)'s fourth full-length studio album 4 WALLS.[72] Boys and Girls was released November 3; the song's title track reached number one on all eight of the major real-time music charts the day of release[73] and was the number one song on the Gaon digital, download, and streaming charts for all of November.[74][75][76]
One month later, Zico released the mini-album Gallery. The album's title song, "Eureka," along with the songs "Pride and Prejudice" and "Veni Vidi Vici" took the top three spots on multiple real-time Korean music charts the day of their release.[77]
2016
On January 25, 2016, Zico released two songs, "I Am You, You Are Me" and "It Was Love," which featured Luna from F(x). "I Am You, You Are Me" topped six of Korea's real-time charts the day of release, with "It Was Love" taking the number two spot on many of those charts.[78]

He did not use the word 'faggot' with the intent to be derogatory toward homosexuals. It was used only as a borrowed word and as part of the musical narrative. If he had known that it had a meaning of being derogatory towards homosexuals, he would have strictly censored it [from the song]...Just as Zico has freedom in his music, he has no prejudice or negative intention with respect to homosexuals, and he has respect for sexual minorities. He had no intention to be derogatory towards homosexuals and would like to express his deepest apologies toward all those who were hurt by his actions.
